Best Waterproof Camera – The Casio Exilim EX-G1
…But Is It the Best Waterproof Camera?
The Casio Exilim EX-G1 is built to withstand the harsh elements of nature. It is designed for adventure seekers who love to capture the defying moments of their journey. Rated the best rugged compact camera by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) in 2010, it is also rightfully acknowledged as the best waterproof camera in its class. In addition to the waterproof feature, the Casio Exilim EX-G1 is also shock resistant and freeze proof.
Being dubbed as the best water proof camera, the EX-G1 has a waterproofing feature that allows water immersion up to 9.8 feet. The camera can withstand continuous immersion duration of up to 60 minutes. This protection is based on IEC/JIS Protection Class 6 (IPX6) standard, which also protects the electronic device from the damaging effects of dust. It also complies with the Class 8 (IPX8) standard that enables the device to withstand water jets. Hence, cleaning the camera becomes an easier task by simply spraying jets of water. The EX-G1 can also operate under extreme temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit making it freeze proof.

The Casio Exilim EX-G1 is fully protected from the inside out. The material used for its outer body is stainless steel designed to withstand shocks. It borrows the technology used for developing G-Shock wristwatches, another product line of Casio. The camera passed the dropping test up to a height of 7 feet. This level of shock resistance is significantly better than those of its predecessors.
The internal construction of the EX-G1 is made from polycarbonate material with fiberglass reinforcement. To absorb extra impact, a buckle-lock construction is also embedded instead of relying solely on screws to fasten the inner body. The camera lens being made from glass is protected by a resin ring that will lessen the shocks around the lens area. The additional coating on the lens is made from hydrophobic material so as to repel water avoiding light scattering which can ruin the photographs. Of course, the LCD panel, which is another delicate part, is protected by an acrylic plate that is 50% thicker than those used in conventional cameras.
As a digital camera, the Casio Exilim EX-G1 features a 12.1-megapixel sensor which is a typical resolution of compact cameras currently available in the market. It can zoom up to a multiple of 3 times with a focal range of 38-114 mm. The 38mm wide-angle shot is ideal for capturing more details of the landscape into one frame such as images of snowy mountains of winter or gorgeous leaves of autumn. One great feature of the EX-G1 as a point-and-shoot camera that makes it very easy to use is the intelligent autofocus (AF) mechanism. Aside from being able to recognize human faces, the intelligent AF function can also recognize landscapes and other imageries. Once recognized, this system automatically provides the most optimal preset for focus and exposure settings leaving more of the necessary technicalities to the camera.
