Panasonic Waterproof Camera Review

With a fairly high 14 megapixel sensor, a decent 4.6x zoom lens, a wide 2.7” LCD viewer, SDXC support, and 720p HD video recording capability all in a slim package, the TS2 definitely seems like a good point-and-shoot. However, these specs barely scratch the surface of what the Panasonic waterproof camera can offer. What makes it special is the tough-as-nails housing that is said to be able to withstand constant abuse and harsh weather. It can absorb shocks without breaking a sweat up to 6.6 feet and defy weather by snapping pictures at a freezing cold 14⁰F. If you are going out to sea or if you just want to have fun during a pool party, you can take out the TS2 with confidence as its watertight body will take splashes in stride, and can even swim with you to a depth of 33 feet.

If the best waterproof camera is the one you can take with you wherever you go, then the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is certainly aiming for the top. This sequel to the TS1 is a giant leap forward in terms of features and performance. But with several other digital cameras at a similar price in this category, is the refresh enough to merit a second look? 

Performance

A camera is a camera and its primary function will always be to take pictures. If we take away all the bells and whistles, how does the Panasonic waterproof camera perform? Very well, it turns out. Images come out extremely sharp and usable despite using high ISO settings. It’s not the fastest starter out there so, but once it is on, shutter lag is respectable at about a third of a second. The TS2 captures videos in excellent quality, allowing the user to zoom at any time sans noise from the lens motor. It can be plugged directly to a TV or monitor via HDMI for quick reviews or instant sharing. The TS2 is housed in a stylish metal case with rubberized sidings that also cover the ports. It does not show any signs of corrosion despite prolonged and repeated exposure to water. Although the lens is devoid of any covering, it is resistant to scratches and fingerprints.

Comparison with Other Ruggedized Cameras

Among the TS2’s main rivals in the market are the Canon D20, Casio Exilim G EX-G1, CyberShot DSC-TX10, Pentax Optio WG, the Casio Exilim EX-G1, the Olympus TG 610 and the Nikon  AW100 Review. The D10 sells at a lower price and produces pictures that are a bit sharper, but it is incapable of HD recording and its bulk might turn some people off. The Casio EX-G1 and Sony TX5 have slimmer profiles but do not have as much tolerance for underwater depth. Lastly, the TS2 is a better overall performer than both the Pentax W80 and the Olympus Tough-8000.

After a thorough Panasonic Waterproof Camera review, it can be concluded that in terms of image quality and durability, this model stands out from the crowd.
